Above all, sysadmins should keep an eye out for staff using NAS drives that are reachable from the external web – such the over-sharing product Digital Shadows identified. The device publishes an interface on a public IP address, which includes a search function whereby anyone connecting to the device using a web browser is able to search the contents of the device, a spokesman for the East Sussex, UK-based security biz told The Reg yesterday. They can then click through to view the files. We have seen discussion of these devices with links to documents shared between individuals exploiting this vulnerability – often exploiting these devices for the purposes of identity theft. In the interests of responsible disclosure, Digital Shadows did not name the affected NAS box although it has warned the hardware's maker, we're told. Due to the nature of the vulnerability, we are keen not to go into details, other than to say it is a known vulnerability. We have been in touch with the device manufacturer to ensure that they are aware, the spokesman explained.

But given the deployed base of these drives, it is very difficult for the manufacturer to deploy fixes: it would require an update to the firmware of the devices, which requires action on the part of the user to update, or to reconfigure the sharing settings. In the case of the ATM blueprint leak, a contractor using a company laptop backed up his or her work to a consumer-grade storage device, which exposed its contents to the internet – all thanks to its factory settings. In a separate but similar leak, contract bidding documents belonging to a US technology firm ended up online, we're told.Luckily, this type of cock-up is uncommon, but Digital Shadows is worried there's a growing use of devices that, by default, share their contents without requiring authentication to access the files. One simply has to know a vulnerable box's IP address, for instance.

Innocent people are backing up often sensitive work information to these devices, and the content is accessible to anyone. Most scarily, no authentication or access control is applied, allowing individuals to retrieve and search the contents of the drive, the spokesman added.Users of these drives are unaware that this misconfiguration exists, the first they know is that they have been involved in an incident.Alastair Paterson, chief exec of Digital Shadows, reminded El Reg that relying on data loss prevention software to detect leaks of secrets from corporate networks is borderline useless against vulnerable NAS drives – when the boxes are used beyond the companies' boundaries by off-site contractors, staff working from home, and so on.Review PC sales maybe on a downward trend, but it seems there will always be an interest in an alternative to buying into the console wars. Enter the Gigabyte Brix Pro, just one offering among over a dozen from manufacturers that have committed to releasing Steam gaming machines this year.

This heralds the beginning of the latest generation of ultra-compact PCs inspired by Intel's NUC (Next Unit of Computing) hardware. Intel even worked with Gigabyte on assembling the Brix Pro, which can be bought pre-configured or as a barebones PC.As a concept, what makes the Gigabyte Brix Pro interesting is the Intel Core i7-4770R 3.2GHz quad-core processor and the integrated Iris Pro 5200 Graphics that can deliver 4K resolution. This chip isn't available in retail-boxed desktop CPUs (as denoted by the R in the processor name). However, it is available for small form factor PC makers and as this box is Steam-approved, testing its gaming chops is certainly on the agenda here. The review sample build of the Gigabyte Brix Pro came with 8GB of Kingston 1600MHz DDR3L RAM, an Intel 525 240GB mSATA SSD and Windows 8.1 Pro installed. Out of the box it soon lets you know when it’s busy. The fan varies in intensity like a whistling wind when updates are being processed, yet for basic tasks such as web browsing and word-processing, it’s close to silent.

Intel’s Smart Connect Technology goes through the motions of nagging you to turn it on during every restart and if you try to activate it, you’re then informed that the “agent is not running”. The setup then reported “Platform Check Failed… not found in BIOS, or it is not enabled”.It can be set to work in the BIOS though, but after that palaver, I turned it off anyway as it seemed more useful to laptop than desktop configurations. In short, it collects emails, social media stuff and synchronises files in the background when the device is in sleep mode. You won’t find a VGA port around the back but having the option of HDMI and mini DisplayPort is very useful. Unfortunately, the latter doesn’t double up to perform Thunderbolt interfacing duties – a missed opportunity, surely? Talking of doubling up though, besides the mSATA SSD interface, the base can accommodate a 2.5-inch drive so you can maximise capacity and performance with additional storage. There are only two RAM slots and according to Intel the Core i7-4770R processor will accommodate up to 32GB of RAM.

In the box you’ll also find a plate for VESA mounting, so you can have a go at a DIY all-in-one PC and screw it to the back of a monitor. To save you from groping round the back of the screen in this scenario, there’s a tweak in the BIOS that enables power on via USB, so a mouse or keyboard can be configured to bring it to life.Measuring the SSD performance using CrystalDiskMark appeared a long way off the 550MB/s read and 520MB/s write speeds claimed for the drive, as it clocked up 450MB/s read and 298MB/s write from the boot drive. ATTO scores gave a very different picture with larger file tests exceeding Intel’s figures with 530MB/s read and 556MB/s write. Startup times were good though, consistently managing a boot to desktop in just under 12 seconds.Benchmarking with Futuremark’s PCMark 8 clocked up a respectable best figure of 3581 with a casual gaming frame rate of just over 50fps and this is at full HD, so it should keep gamers happy – we'll find out what our PC gaming expert Lucy Orr thinks of the Brix Pro in a moment.French tablet, smartphone, soon-to-be-smartwatch, and connected objects maker Archos has announced an Android-powered netbook that will be available this June for the low, low price of under $170 – and yes, as you might have guessed, that means $169.99.

More than half (51 per cent) of those surveyed for Get Safe Online have been a victim of online crime1 but only a third of those who'd been a victim (32 per cent) actually reported the offence. Around half (47 per cent) of victims did not know to whom to address their online crime complaints. Action Fraud, the UK’s national fraud reporting centre, is aiming to boost awareness about crime reporting through an ongoing educational campaign. The survey found that most people still fail to apply basic security precautions to their actives online. For example, more than half (54 per cent) of mobile phone users and around a third (37 per cent) of laptop owners do not have a password or PIN number for their device.A significant minority of victims change their behaviour after becoming victims of fraud. For example, nearly half (45 per cent) opt for stronger passwords and 42 per cent report being extra vigilant when shopping online. The figures are based on a poll of 2,000 people by Vision Critical for GetSafeOnline.org

Francis Maude, Minister for the Cabinet Office, said that the government was committed to boosting cyber-security awareness as part of its strategy of making the UK the world's best location for e-commerce.“We want to make the UK one of the most secure places to do business in cyberspace, Maude said in a statement. We have a £860m Cyber Security Programme which supports law enforcement’s response to cybercrime and we are working with the private sector to help all businesses protect vital information assets.“Our ‘Get Safe Online’ and ‘Cyber Streetwise’ campaigns provide easy to understand information for the public on how and why they should protect themselves. Cyber security is not an issue for Government alone – we must all take action to defend ourselves against threats,” he added.Tony Neate, Chief Executive of Get Safe Online, commented: “Get Safe Online Week this year is all about ‘Don’t be a victim’ and we can all take simple steps to protect ourselves, including putting a password on your computer or mobile device, never clicking on a link sent by a stranger, using strong passwords and always logging off from an account or website when you’re finished. The more the public do this, and together with better conviction rates, the more criminals won’t be able to hide behind a cloak of anonymity.”

Detective Superintendent Pete O’Doherty, head of the City of London Police’s NFIB, added: “I would also call on anyone who has fallen victim to an online fraud to report to Action Fraud. Only by doing this will local police forces be able to track down the main offenders and ensure victims receive the best possible support as they try to recover from what can be an extremely difficult and upsetting experience.”Victim of cyber-enabled economic fraud should report it to Action Fraud, the UK’s national fraud reporting centre by calling 0300 123 20 40 or by visiting actionfraud.police.uk. If you are a victim of online abuse or harassment, you should report it to your local police force. General advice on how to stay safe online is available from GetSafeOnline.org here.1Online crime - as covered by Get Safe Online's survey – is defined to include anything from ID theft to hacking or deliberate distribution of viruses as well as online abuse.Score another point for Chipzilla in its quest for relevance in the mobile market: Samsung has announced a new, low-cost Chromebook that's powered by an Intel processor.
