Despite Google’s reluctance to reveal precise user numbers, YouTube’s active audience runs into the hundreds of millions, placing it alongside Twitter and Google+, but it has a lower profile. Most people see YouTube as a video library, or end point for search engine queries, but I believe Google’s ambition to own a social network will make YouTube increasingly social and collaborative.YouTube will play an increasingly important role in driving traffic to websitesYouTube will play an increasingly important role in driving traffic to websitesUnlike many commentators (even some on PC Pro) I don’t believe Google+ will sink like its half-baked predecessors Wave and Buzz, because Google is integrating it into so many of its other services. For example, whenever you comment on a post, all further interactions can take place within a single Gmail thread, and it’s becoming hard to get the most out of a Google account without using Google+. If you have a YouTube account, you’ll be invited to merge it with your Google+ account when you next log in, and it’s likely that at some point in the future the two services will effectively become one.

In my view, video is a critical part of Google’s vision of the future, so YouTube will play an increasingly important role in driving traffic to websites. It’s possible to achieve front-page position for a sufficiently precise key phrase using a video – whether it’s easier in practice than using standard SEO techniques is beside the point, since a video thumbnail is more likely to catch the eye than a line of text. The biggest advantage of video, however, is that it can be used to generate traffic from multiple sources.Say, for example, you run a laptop repair business and a customer brings in his Samsung Series 3 to have its screen replaced. Record the technician at work, edit it down to a sequence of steps, and embellish them with voiceover and captions (no more than a couple of hours of work). Upload the finished video to YouTube under the title "How to replace the screen on a Samsung Series 3 laptop", and repeat for every major laptop model repair.Google will index your videos automatically, and they can also be embedded into your firm’s website, its Facebook page and Google+ stream. This will drive traffic both from YouTube itself and from standard Google searches, where I’d expect it to appear on the front page.

What’s that I hear you cry? You didn’t learn to repair laptops only to give away your trade secrets in a video? Won’t it reduce business if potential customers learn to do it themselves? No, because most users will be searching for those phrases in case it turns out to be very easy, but also to find practitioners if it isn’t. Look at it from their point of view: they typed "how to repair an HP dv6 keyboard" and up pops your video. They’ll take that as a recommendation from Google that you’re an expert. They may watch your video and are likely to conclude that they’d rather have you deal with it than try it themselves. Either way, you’ve become visible to them in a way that your competitors aren’t.That’s all very well if they’re using Google Search, but what if they’re looking on YouTube? If they find your video, and you’ve included your branding and a URL prominently, they’ll very likely click the link through to your website. The likelihood of them coming across your video in the first place, however, depends on how high YouTube ranks it, so it’s essential to understand the factors that contribute to this before you upload it. My research suggests that YouTube relies on four main criteria to decide where your production appears in search results.

  • Fujitsu FPCBP48 laptop battery
  • FUJITSU FMV-TC8230 laptop battery

The first, and the easiest to get right, is the quality of the match between the user’s search term and your video’s title. For sufficiently long-tailed phrases, this can be enough on its own to secure you a prominent position, but if you want to rank well for higher traffic searches you’ll need to consider three other criteria: views, likes and comments. It makes sense that the more often a video is viewed, the higher it will rank, but what constitutes a view?YouTube is coy about this, since revealing such information could enable people to game the system, but it’s very likely that it keeps count not only of the number of times a video has been started, but also how often it was watched all or most of the way through. Rumour has it that this second metric strongly influences ranking, since it indicates the video was relevant in both content and length. A practical consequence of this is that you should make your video no longer than necessary. I thought I was being helpful by creating a 15-minute candle-making video, as it was so thorough, but I was almost certainly damaging its chances of a high rank.Video comments are also very powerful: YouTube considers a heavily commented video to be engaging and relevant to its target audience. This means that by disabling comments to protect yourself from abuse and spam, you’re also reducing your ranking. By responding to comments, you can generate more interest and a further boost. Finally, the more "likes" a video receives the better, although I suspect this is the least important of the four factors, since a user doesn’t have to be particularly engaged to click that button.

Drum up interest – views, comments and likes – as you launch each video by promoting it heavily on the other social networks and keeping an eye on any discussions that develop. Finally, use the embed code provided by YouTube to include the video in your own site – that way, any "likes" or comments will contribute to its ranking.Ever since Samsung released its low-cost 7in Galaxy Tab 2 earlier this year, manufacturers have been falling over themselves to release low-cost compact tablets. First there was the excellent Nexus 7, then we saw the Amazon Fire HD, and there are more launches just around the corner. All of a sudden, there’s an awful lot of competition in the sector, something Acer may not have been anticipating when it decided on the price for its Iconia Tab A110. Last year £179 for this tablet would have looked quite good; now, it looks pricey next to the £159 Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire HD.That wouldn’t be a problem if it was a brilliant product. Alas, there are several areas where the A110 loses out to its cheaper rivals. The most obvious of its weaknesses is the screen, which is poor by any standards. Measured with a colorimeter, its maximum brightness tops out at 208cd/m2, which for a laptop might be just about acceptable; for a compact tablet you might use as a reading device or for gaming on the commute, it simply isn’t bright enough.Viewing angles are poor: hold the A110 in landscape orientation then tilt it back and forth, and you’ll see the colours shift distractingly. And with most recently announced budget 7in tablets now hitting 1,280 x 800 or higher, the A110’s resolution of 1,024 x 600 is doubly disappointing. We’re distinctly underwhelmed, and the chunky, 11.5mm-thick chassis and hefty 384g weight don’t help with the overall impression.

There is some redemption, though, and it comes in the form of a powerful CPU. Beneath the Acer’s rather dowdy exterior, lurks the heart of a beast, with a powerful 1.2GHz quad-core Tegra 3 T30L CPU and 1GB of RAM. Storage isn’t so good at 8GB, but you do get a microSDHC slot capable of taking another 32GB, something the Nexus 7 can’t offer. This core hardware helped the A110 produce scores of 1,759ms in SunSpider and 4,208 in Quadrant. For performance, it holds its own with the Nexus 7, which achieved a similar SunSpider score and was slightly slower in Quadrant. Games, from the demanding Asphalt 7 to Shadowgun and HD movies (streaming or local) didn’t cause it any trouble at all, and the Jelly Bean front-end responds as quickly and smoothly to the touch as any tablet we’ve tried. It’s no surprise there isn’t a rear camera – most other tablets at this price sacrifice that feature – with only a front-facing 2-megapixel unit capable of 720p video. It’s better than the Nexus 7’s 1.2-megapixel camera, though, and although the battery is smaller at 3,420mAh, the A110’s stamina is still acceptable. It lasted 7hrs 3mins in our looping video test with the power profile set to “High performance”; the Nexus 7 achieved 8hrs 48mins in this test.

The trouble the Acer Iconia Tab has is that it’s beaten in almost every respect by the cheaper Nexus 7 – that microSD slot excepted. It’s the poor screen that really seals it for this tablet, though. Even if Acer did manage to match the price of Google’s Nexus 7, we still wouldn’t recommend it.Today's top tech stories include software that can figure out where you've been and where you're going, what MPs Google when at parliament, Spotify for Windows, and US customs gadget grabs. The Guardian has revealed software called Riot from a US firm called Raytheon, which can search through all web content of a person, tracking where they've been and guessing where they'll be.In a video seen by the newspaper, the software scans through looking for meta data on photographs, specifically looking for location data. "Riot pulls out this information, showing not only the photographs posted onto social networks by individuals, but also the location at which the photographs were taken," the paper said. "The video shows that Nick, who posts his location regularly on Foursquare, visits a gym frequently at 6am early each week... So if you ever did want to try to get hold of Nick, or maybe get hold of his laptop, you might want to visit the gym at 6am on a Monday."

Those dodgy websites that the Daily Mail and certain politicians want to block? Turns out some fairly steamy sites are fabulously popular in parliament, according to a story in - you guessed it - The Mail. After a freedom of information request into which sites were the most visited by MPs, peers and their staff, The Mail discovered that adult extra-marital dating website Out of Town Affairs had received 52,000 hits in seven months from official machines. "The site had more hits in December from parliamentary computers than the official websites for the Treasury, Ministry of Justice and Department for Education," the paper points out.Microsoft has announced the arrival of the Spotify app in its Windows Phone 8 app store, with a beta version of the streaming app being rolled out. According to the Windows Phone blog, the app is free, and there's a free trial, after which a $9.99 subscription applies when it is available. "The app is just starting its roll out, so it might take a few more hours before it shows up in search or is available for download where you are," the company said.Travelling to the States? Better leave any sensitive company or classified info at home for the near future. Wired reports how a watchdog looking into the consumer rights impact of US border control officials' "suspicionless seizures of electronic devices" has ruled it's perfectly legitimate to hold visitor gadgets for 120 days without any apparent reason.

"Imposing a requirement that officers have reasonable suspicion in order to conduct a border search of an electronic device would be operationally harmful without concomitant civil rights/civil liberties benefits," the watchdog said. The report was, however, put together by the same Department of Homeland Security that is responsible for border controls, so was unlikely to be too hard on its officers.Ivy Bridge is on the way, and that means we’re seeing Sandy Bridge Ultrabook prices fall ever lower. Novatech’s first Ultrabook, the 14in nFinity 2367 Plus, crams in the same low-voltage CPUs and solid-state storage found in dearer rivals, but for a reasonable £625. It’s clear the battle for the budget Ultrabook is only just beginning. We weren’t sure what to expect from Novatech’s cut-price effort, but the nFinity 2367 Plus makes no attempt to hide its budget. It’s shod in a basic matte black chassis with little in the way of luxurious touches. The brushed aluminium lid adds a splash of class, but the rest of the chassis is covered in a slightly rough matte plastic, and it’s not exactly a lithe design. Other details hint at the Novatech’s humble beginnings: the ugly font on the keyboard, or the cheap-feeling rubber grommet stuffing the Ethernet port on the right-hand edge. It’s not that the Novatech feels flimsy. At 1.61kg, it’s a little heavier than some, but the stiff base and solid lid feel reassuringly stout. It’s only once you look up close that you’ll notice a slight ripple and bounce in the keyboard’s base, while further prodding reveals a few millimetres of give in the plastic wrist rest.
