Windows 10 still has its share of annoyances — having to frequently fiddle with text size on high-res displays like these, not being able to uninstall all of Microsoft’s default apps, the Edge browser’s general okayness — but taken as a whole, it’s easy to get along with. Unless you’re entrenched in the world of Apple, you won’t miss much coming here from macOS. (Though we’ll revisit that in a couple months.) If you’re an Xbox owner, it might not even be a contest. I can’t say it’s outright better than Apple’s panel, but it’s still pretty fantastic. It’s a 13.3-inch IPS screen, with a 2560 x 1440 resolution. That’s technically less dense than 13-inch Pro’s “Retina” (or, 2560 x 1600) display, but any difference in sharpness is barely noticeable. Beyond that, it gets vibrant colors, good viewing angles, and excellent brightness. My test unit used an IPS panel with the same resolution as the Vaio. A cheaper model has a less sharp 1080p panel, while another comes with an OLED display, which’d theoretically make colors pop a bit more.

With this unit, though, the Yoga still produces accurate tones and even better viewing angles. Its major weakness is brightness; it’s a ways behind the Z Flip at its max, which makes it harder to read in the sun. Its semi-glossy material attracts its share of smudges, too. But again, it’s firmly on the “good” side of the display spectrum. If there’s one thing Lenovo knows, it’s keyboards. Time and again, its ThinkPad line nails it, and the X1 Yoga is no exception. It’s too thin to be the most pleasing of the bunch, but it’s still fast, well-spaced, and highly comfortable. With a benchmark like the 10FastFingers typing test, I consistently put out more words per minute than usual, with less errors. I’d take it over the MacBook Pro’s flatter layout any day.The Vaio’s keyboard is closer to that of the MacBook Pro, and while it’s not bad, it’s can’t compete with the pure pleasure of the Yoga. It’s laid out well, and it’s nicely smudge-resistant, but its keys take too little force to press, which makes them feel too stiff. On that same typing test, I made more mistakes than I’m used to, at a slower rate to boot. The Vaio's trackpad can get a bit jumpy on occasion, while the Yoga's is both smoother to the touch and more responsive to gestures and sensitive movements. (It also comes with Lenovo’s usual little red “pointing stick,” if you prefer that.)

Both devices aren't as precise as the MacBook Pro’s trackpad, though. Even with the Yoga, there’s always some sense that you’re dragging the device by the tail to make it to do what you want. This has long been a bugbear for Windows machines, and even on some of its better models, it’s still not a regular guarantee. Both machines got me through the majority of my workday without much trouble, but the Yoga seems to have the slight edge. It usually petered out around nine hours, while the Vaio lasted closer to eight. That’s good, but with the Pro pushing closer to 12, it’s all relative. If anything holds these two back, it’s that they each have cheaper variants that work in much the same way. The Yoga has the ThinkPad X1 Carbon, the Vaio Z Flip has the Vaio Z. The latter trades away some performance, but for most people, all you really lose is the ability to flip the screens around. If you’re shopping for a MacBook Pro alternative, though, that flexibility is part of the appeal. In the Yoga’s case, so is the keyboard and durability. In the Vaio’s, so is the power and display. In both cases, so is the size. (Or lack thereof.)

Ultimately, I think most people should wait until Apple shows us what it’s got. If you’re a Windows loyalist, though, the Yoga is the more utilitarian, business-friendly machine, while the Vaio is as luxurious as Windows laptops get. Either way, you shouldn’t feel too compromised. The new Surface Book is being sold from the Microsoft online store, as well as Amazon. Other physical and online retailers will list their availability of the Surface Book soon. It's somewhat historic, as whenever you buy a Windows laptop, it's always been made by a company like Samsung, HP, Dell, or Lenovo, among many, many others. This time, everything from the hardware to the software is all Microsoft. So far, reviews for the Surface Book have been positive, with most of the reviewers praising the display, touchpad, keyboard, battery life, and the Surface Book's ability to separate from the keyboard to turn into a tablet. The keyboard houses an extra battery, as well a a separate processor for certain models of the Surface Book that's specifically designed to process graphics-heavy tasks, like games and video editing.

Most of the complaints revolving around the relatively high $1,499 price tag and the fact that you can't shut the laptop flat because of the Surface Book's unique hinge.Today, you can also buy the latest Surface Pro 4. It's somewhat similar to the surface book, except it has no hinge to prop it up. Instead, it uses a kickstand that comes out from the back of the Surface Pro. The keyboard and trackpad is more like a cover, and doesn't harbor any extra components. The Galaxy Tab Pro S (what a mouthful!) runs Windows 10 and comes with a snap-on keyboard cover. It starts at $999. That's a pretty good deal. Apple and Microsoft make you spend over $130 to get their keyboard covers. But unlike Apple and Microsoft, Samsung isn't making bold claims that its new tablet can replace your laptop for good. Instead, it's targeting "mobile work forces" that need to do everything a Windows machine can do, but also want something thin, light and portable.

At first glance, it looks a lot like Samsung's Android tablets, but when you turn it on, you can see it's running Windows 10. It's incredibly thin and light and weighs just over a pound and a half. The keyboard snaps on the back with magnets. It also has a trackpad that seemed pretty good in my brief test. (One of my biggest beefs with the iPad Pro keyboard was that it doesn't have a trackpad, which makes navigation a pain.)It includes a USB-C port, the new kind of connector that Apple, Google, and a handful of other companies introduced in some gadgets last year. USB-C is used for charging and connecting to accessories or displays. It'll replace the regular USB plug you're used to in a few years.Samsung says the Galaxy Tab Pro S can get 10 hours of battery life, and it has a quick charge option that'll charge the battery up faster than normal. It starts with 128 GB of storage, 4 GB of RAM, and will be available at some carriers with an LTE connection.Xiaomi, the "Apple of China," has launched a Windows 10 tablet, called the Mi Pad 2, at an event in Beijing. The device, which has been described as an "iPad mini that runs Windows 10," has a 7.9-inch screen, an 8 megapixel camera, a 64-bit Intel Atom processor (capable of running some PC apps), and a massive 6,190mAh battery which supports fast charging. The Mi Pad 2 comes with either 16 or 64GB of internal storage.

Microsoft has been making a push for tablets running Windows 10 in search of one billion users by 2017. A few partners, such as Dell and Lenovo, have started making 2-in-1 PCs, but the uptake of tablets (i.e. without the laptop aspect of a 2-in-1) has been slow.Chromebooks are at a turning point. The best of Google’s low-cost laptops have long been good values, but with the forthcoming introduction of Android apps to Chrome OS — and thus, better offline and gaming support — the things that make a Good Chromebook have changed.Namely, you’ll want a touchscreen. Most apps are still made with those in mind. Right now, though, most of the Chromebooks worth buying don’t have those. If they do, they tend to be a bit too small, or a bit too light on the spec sheet — at least if you ever want to use them as more than a secondary computer.Meanwhile, if a Chromebook does have good specs and isn't undersized, then it's probably too expensive.

It was only a matter of time before the market caught up, though, and with Acer’s new Chromebook R13, the shift appears to have started.Announced at the IFA show in Berlin on Wednesday, the Taiwanese manufacturer’s latest seems to tick off all the essential boxes for a Chrome OS machine ready to roll with the Google Play Store (which it'll get by the end of the year). Most significantly, the Chromebook R13 comes with a 13.3-inch, 1080p, convertible, touchscreen display. That is the most comfortable size, with a not-aggravating resolution, in a flippable form factor that’s convenient for watching videos. It should also work relatively comfortably with Android apps going forward.Internally, the Chromebook R13 uses a quad-core MediaTek chip alongside 4GB of RAM. That should be fine enough to get through Chrome OS’s light load, but we’ve yet to test a MediaTek chip on a Chromebook, so there’s a chance it won’t be the fastest thing around.

To wrap things up, the stereo speakers built into each side of the tablet are a bit puny so while the sound is rich and detailed there just isn't quite enough of it.
