Dominguez cautions that his explorations shouldn't be construed as official support for Linux on the M3800. But Sputnik program pilot Barton George says that if enough people use Dominguez's findings to install Linux on the systems and Dell gets enough positive feedback, the PC maker may be willing to offer the M3800 with Ubuntu preinstalled. So get cracking. Trade has been brisk for Taiwanese slab-cum-notebook builder Asustek, but the shine has not yet returned to its financial figures.According to fresh paperwork filed by the company, sales for the third quarter of 2013 came in at NT$107.44bn ($3.6bn, £2.2bn), a slide of four per cent on the same period a year ago but a gain of 19 per cent on previous quarter. The bottom line was down a whopping 26 per cent on the same three months of 2012 to NT$4.94bn ($167m, £104m), and up four per cent on the second quarter of 2013.As it stands, notebooks and hybrid computers (laptops that turn into touchscreen tablets) account for 57 per cent of sales, the EPAD fondleslab represents a fifth, with motherboards, expansion cards and others accounting for the remaining 23 per cent.

The latest results come after a promising start to the year when Asustek looked to be surfing the slab sales swell better than most of its traditional-PC maker rivals. But the summer quarter was rough on Asus, with personal computer sales declining 21.2 per cent year on year. The biz staged something of a recovery in Q3 2013, rising ten per cent in that market.According to the Taipei Times, Asustek CEO Jerry Shen told investors he planned to launch new smartphones at CES 2014 and Google-powered Chromebooks in the next quarter.“We remain optimistic about the desktop and laptop market, but our priority is to make the company’s smartphone business turn a profit next year,” CFO David Chang added. Asustek hopes to shift 5 million smartmobes next year, up from 1 million in 2013, we're told. HP's Chromebook 11, which the world got excited about back in October because it appeared to be the first charge-over-USB laptop, has been pulled from sale because charge-over-USB is too hot to handle.

Google has issued what it's euphemistically calling an ”important update” about the device saying it and HP “... are pausing sales of the HP Chromebook 11 after receiving a small number of user reports that some chargers included with the device have been damaged due to overheating during use.”The Chocolate Factory says those with dud chargers should grab whatever other USB charger they have to hand and resume normal cloudified computing. There's no word of a freebie replacement.Critics could feel this incident is a way to point out that the whole Chromebook caper is ridiculous. Realists may choose to note that Google has found only a few power supplies running hot and that the power supplies are almost certainly not the product of HP's factories or sweat.re:Invent 2013 Amazon is bringing its margin-destroying, no-fun business model to the thrilling world of virtual desktop infrastructure – and could upset the balance sheets of traditional VDI providers along the way.The Amazon Workspaces technology was announced today during the inaugural keynote speech for the web bazaar's second-ever re:Invent annual cloud conference in Las Vegas.

The tech represents another step by Bezos & Co into the traditional enterprise, and will send a chill down the spine of VDI kingpins Citrix and VMware. You get to live that dream of centrally managing your desktops, but [with] no hardware, no software, no infrastructure, no long-term commitments, said Amazon Web Services chief Andy Jassy in his keynote speech, tiptoeing over the physical machines needed to display said centrally managed desktops. The tech costs $35 a month and streams to your PC a system running Windows 7, Adobe Flash, Internet Explorer 9, Firefox, the Java Runtime Environment, and other apps – all powered by one virtual CPU, 50GB of storage, and 3.75GB of RAM per instance, or $60 for a slightly better system backed by two virtual CPUs, 7.5GB of RAM, and 100GB storage. If companies have further needs they can fork out an extra $15 per instance to get tools such as Microsoft Office, or Trend Micro gear for security.

It's half the price of what the typical virtual desktop infrastructure solution is today, he says. It's a very compelling value proposition.Amazon published a cost analysis of an idealized Workspaces deployment versus a traditional system using on-premises infrastructure, and predictably demonstrated significant cost savings. To reassure those cloud cognoscenti who are well aware of the variable nature of AWS instances, Jassy said the operational performance will be consistent.Workspaces is capable of maintaining persistent sessions, so a user can migrate from a laptop to a mobile device without losing their data, much like Google's own Chrome OS. The technology became available in a limited preview on Wednesday.Workspaces will be delivered by a virtual private cloud that uses EC2 instances, and can be connected to on-premises tech such as an Active Directory via a virtual private network, the company said. Though Amazon doesn't specify the exact instance, we have a hunch the system uses the just-launched G2 servers because of their GRID GPU streaming features. We reckon one early use of this technology will be along the lines of the desktop sharing feature built into Amazon's new Kindles, which were announced in September; for example, imagine a virtualized desktop shared with a help desk or admin to fix, as opposed to using a remote desktop protocol.

Though virtual desktop infrastructure has, much like the Linux desktop, been a technology always a year away from broad adoption, it can be a handy tool for organizations. With Workspaces, Amazon has further simplified the way people can consume the tech, and should give it another foothold inside traditional cloud-averse organizations. After a bit of prodding, Amazon's VDI product team attempted to clarify to El Reg how its virtual desktop scheme works with Microsoft's Windows software licensing:Amazon WorkSpaces is not based on Windows VDA [Virtual Desktop Access]. Amazon WorkSpaces provides the Windows 7 experience to end-users, delivered by Windows Server 2008 R2. All appropriate Microsoft licensing fees are paid by Amazon Web Services to Microsoft under the SPLA [Services Provider License Agreement] license program, and customers are not required to pay any additional license fee for each WorkSpace they provision. No CAL [Client Access License] is included for WorkSpaces in our total cost of ownership analysis, as customers are not required to purchase any CALs to use the WorkSpaces service; they pay only the published monthly charge for each WorkSpace. In an on-premises environment, customers would be required to purchase a CAL.

Dell is taking another stab at making the Sputnik Ultrabook it converted from Windows to Ubuntu even cloudier for developers. The company said on Tuesday it has committed fresh engineering brains to the Sputnik project to help iron out remaining wrinkles.Dell has also enlisted open-source virtualization start up Docker to try and improve the ability to build, test and deploy apps to VMware and OpenStack.Code for a profile tool repository has been posted to GitHib and is open for evaluation, testing and feedback from the community until December 3.Sputnik project captain Barton George, Dell web vertical sector director, blogged it was all systems go following false starts.“We garnered a fair amount of attention and made some progress but unfortunately not as much as I would have liked. I am very happy to report therefore that recently we have put together an intrepid group of developers and architects within Dell to pick up the profile tool charge,” George said.

Those joining Sputnik include one of the engineers from Enstratius, the cloud-management specialist bought by Dell in May, members from Dell Services' office of the CTO, as well as the Dell Cloud Services development and architecture team.Enstratius' team have also switched to using the Dell XPS 13 developer edition as their primary laptop.Dell is also now working with engineers Docker to consult on and implement that company’s Profile Tool for building virtual apps.Profiles are one of the two main keys to Sputnik as a cloud-developer tool. Last year Sputnik came with a profile that let you save the state and contents of your laptop to a remote repository for safe keeping and replication.Docker, called dotCloud before it rebranded, is an open-source project that lets you create and ship any application as a lightweight container. According to Docker, any container you build and test on (for example) a laptop will run at full scale on a production server, on VMware, OpenStack and baremetal servers.

The inference, therefore, is that by working with Dell Docker will let you build, test, package and deploy these virtualized apps using Sputnik as the launch pad.The other big thing about Sputnik was the ability to build a simulated cloud on your system using Ubutu’s JuJu, which abstracts deployment.“While you can currently use Linux containers and JuJu to get your apps into the clouds, we are working on a version that will provide even greater automation. This will be phase II after we get the profile tool a bit further along,” he said. Review The reception that greeted the launch of the iPad Air was rather more muted than the gangbusting opening weekend of the iPhone 5S. Sure, it was slimmer and lighter than its predecessor, and had a faster processor, but that’s the sort of thing you take for granted with any update. On paper it all looks rather dry. The Air is 20 per cent slimmer than last year’s iPad 4 – down from 9.4mm to 7.5mm – while the weight of the 16GB Wi-Fi only model reviewed here drops by almost a third, from 652g to 469g. The 4G/LTE version weighs in at 478g. And while the 9.7-inch display with its 2048 x 1536 resolution remains essentially unchanged, the bezels on either side of the screen have been trimmed, reducing the width of the unit from 186mm to 169.5mm.
